Ethan Chemxananou receives a 75 month prison sentence for inflicting violence against his family for more than 10 years
Today, Multnomah County District Attorney Rod Underhill announced that 45-year old Ethan Chemxananou received a 75 month prison sentence in January of 2020 after a jury unanimously convicted him of four counts of criminal mistreatment in the first degree for causing physical injury to his children nearly five years ago.
This investigation started in September of 2018 when Chemxananou’s ex-wife ultimately came forward and disclosed years’ worth of domestic violence that involved her and her three children. Due to the statute of limitations, only four counts of criminal mistreatment in the first degree could be charged.
At trial, the state presented evidence to show that in spring of 2014 Chemxananou punched his 13 year old son in the stomach and stomped on his back multiple times; that in summer of 2014 Chemxananou knocked his son to the ground and strangled him until he lost consciousness; that in winter of 2014 Chemxananou hit his daughter in the head with a dinner plate; and that in spring 2015 he pushed his son and punched his daughter, causing significant damage to her nose.
Chemxananou had convinced his children – who are now adults – that if they ever called police, they would go into foster care and never see each other again. He also convinced his then wife the abuse was her fault and convinced her that if she called police, her children would be taken away from her.
Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge Kelly Skye imposed a 75 month prison sentence to be followed by three years of post-prison supervision.
“The full extent of the abuse and trauma Ethan Chemxananou inflicted upon his family is not adequately represented in the charging document itself because of the statute of limitations, but the seriousness of his conduct is certainly reflected with this sentence,” said Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney Todd Jackson, who prosecuted this case. “Mr. Chemxananou tormented his family for more than a decade. Not only did he physically abuse them, he used his power, violence and fear to manipulate them and prevent them from contacting police.”
The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office recognizes Gresham Police Detective Adam Wright for his dedicated efforts investigating this case.
