Injured: Sundborg,Tom, 55 year old male - Bend, Oregon
On 07/15/21 at about 5:00 p.m., Deschutes County 911 received a phone call from a reporting party reporting an injured Mt. Biker on Swampy Lakes Mt. Bike Trail #23 about 2 miles from Swampy Lakes Snow Park.
Ten Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue volunteers along with one deputy responded to the call. One SAR volunteer was in the area and responded via his own Mt. bike arriving within 30 minutes of the call. This SAR volunteer began providing immediate medical aide while waiting for the remaining units to arrive.
After an initial medical evaluation an air ambulance was requested to evacuate the injured party and Lifeflight responded to the area. Within the next hour, the additional SAR volunteers arrived on scene both on foot and via ATV and Lifeflight landed within approximately 0.2 miles of the patient.
By 7:25 pm, the patient had been treated, packaged and transported the short distance to the awaiting air ambulance. The patient was then transferred to the care of Lifeflight with life threatening injuries.
The SAR volunteers then escorted the victim’s family down the trail, back to the snow park where remaining family waited.
