Fatal Motor Vehicle Accident

NARRATIVE:
On Tuesday, 02/13/19, at approximately 10:21 AM, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a reported injury motor vehicle accident in the 65000 block of Old Bend Redmond Highway near Journey Avenue. Deschutes County 911 received reports of a single vehicle that had driven through a fence and impacted head on into a tree which was reported to be operated by an elderly male driver with no passengers.
Deputies arrived on the scene with medics from the Bend Fire Department and determined the driver, identified as Frank Farey, had been operating a red 2002 Suzuki SUV traveling northbound on Bend Redmond Highway, when for unknown reasons at this time, failed to negotiate a left curve in the roadway. Mr. Farey drove off the embankment into the yard of a residence on the east side of the roadway, crashing through a fence and impacting head on into a large juniper tree causing significant front end damage to the vehicle.
Bend Fire Department was able to remove Mr. Farey from the vehicle and transport him to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend, where Mr. Farey passed away from his injuries. Speed, drugs/alcohol are not believed to be factors in this crash at this time. The roadway was dry with no obstructions. The sheriff’s office was assisted on scene by the Bend Fire Department. One lane of travel was partially blocked for approximately 30 minutes to allow for emergency vehicle parking and both directions of travel on the highway were maintained. This investigation is ongoing.
