Highway 97 Brush Fire (Photo) - 06/26/20

At 1:34 pm, Bend Fire & Rescue crews were dispatched to a reported brush fire on the east side of Highway 97 near milepost 132.  Upon arrival, an approximately 1 acre fire was found burning in heavy, older juniper and brush at 64450 N. Hwy 97, a property owned by the City of Bend.  Forward progress of the fire was quickly halted, but mop up was extensive due to the involvement of multiple old growth junipers.  Multiple agencies responded to the incident, including Alfalfa Fire, Cloverdale Fire, US Forest Service, Bend Police, Deschutes County Sheriff's Office, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.  Upon investigation, the fire was found to be human-caused, but an exact cause could not be determined.

Bend Fire & Rescue would like to remind the community that fire season is upon us, and conditions are very dry.  Now is the time to prepare your home and property, and have a plan in place in case of wildfire.  Being prepared in advance for a wildfire could save your life and property.  Visit www.projectwildfire.org for important information on how to reduce your risk and be prepared for a wildfire.
