On Friday, September 4, 2026, at about 2:45 a.m., Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies were conducting a Labor Day weekend DUII enforcement mission when a deputy saw two vehicles heading west on Highway 26 near SW Murray Blvd., at a high rate of speed.
The deputy caught up with the two vehicles and noticed the driver of a white Audi attempting to flag him down to direct his attention towards a black Mercedes. The driver of the Mercedes sped away, and the deputy stopped to speak with the Audi driver. The deputy learned they were chasing the Mercedes that had just been stolen outside a bar in Portland with their friend still inside the vehicle.
Deputies responding to highway 26 located the Mercedes, still at speeds over 100 mph, heading east towards Portland and began pursuing. The pursuit continued through Portland and out towards Scappoose on Highway 30, before the Mercedes ran out of gas. Deputies detained the driver and found the passenger inside uninjured. The passenger said she tried to call for help, but the driver grabbed her phone and continued speeding away.
The driver, 27-year-old Tyrone Thompson of Gresham, was arrested and taken to the Washington County Jail for the following:
- Kidnapping in the second degree
- Unauthorized use of a motor vehicle
- Possession of a stolen vehicle
- Attempting to elude
- Reckless driving
- Reckless endangering
- Criminal mischief
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call non-emergency dispatch at 503-629-0111 and reference case number 50-26-12522.
During the Labor Day traffic safety mission, deputies made 448 traffic stops for violations and found eight impaired drivers. Thank you to all the drivers who planned ahead and made responsible choices.
