Update: Man Arrested After Returning to Haul Away Second Half of Dumped Mobile Home (Photo) - 09/18/18

Deputies serving the City of Cornelius have continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the dumping of half a dilapidated mobile home in the parking lot of Echo Shaw Elementary School on Saturday.

Deputies received dozens of tips from the public regarding a Craigslist advertisement posted on September 13 from an individual in Yamhill offering to pay $1,000 to have a mobile home hauled away from his property. Deputies also received information about numerous public sightings of a white truck towing the mobile home northbound on Highway 47 between Yamhill and Cornelius.

When deputies contacted the seller, they learned a man had responded to the ad and hauled away half of the mobile home. That half was later found dumped at the school. He told the seller he would return and haul away the second half at a later time. He also told the seller he planned to convert the mobile home into small housing units in Portland.

On Monday evening, at about 11:30 p.m., the seller contacted deputies to report the suspect was returning to his property to haul away the second half of the mobile home. Deputies responded to the seller’s address outside of Yamhill and arrested him.

The suspect, 35-year-old Derek Conley of Portland, was arrested for second-degree criminal mischief, offensive littering, and an outstanding probation violation warrant for felon in possession of a firearm. He is currently being lodged at the Washington County Jail.

The dumped mobile home was initially towed from the school and stored on City of Cornelius City Works property. It was transported back to the original seller yesterday.

The Sheriff’s Office wishes to thank the media and public for their assistance.
