Inmate Found Deceased After Medical Emergency - 09/17/18

On Sunday, September 16, 2018, at 9:27 p.m., a Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputy found an inmate unresponsive in his cell at the Washington County Jail.

The deputy radioed for medical backup and immediately performed lifesaving measures. Jail medical personnel responded and continued lifesaving efforts, to include utilizing an automated external defibrillator (AED). The Hillsboro Fire Department also responded and later pronounced the individual deceased.

This morning, the Oregon Medical Examiner's Office conducted an autopsy and determined the individual died of natural causes. Consistent with Sheriff’s Office protocol, detectives are conducting a thorough investigation.

Sheriff’s Office chaplains were notified and will provide support to those affected, including individuals in custody and jail staff. The Sheriff’s Office K-9 Crisis Team, comprised of certified therapy dogs, will visit the housing unit where the incident occurred to provide additional support.

The deceased is identified as a 43-year-old male. His name is not being released at this time due to pending family notifications. His next of kin is believed to reside outside the United States, and detectives are reaching out to the appropriate consulate to facilitate communication.

The Washington County Jail employees about 190 certified and civilian staff who provide services to approximately 572 inmates, as well as the attorneys, friends, and family members who visit them. The facility is staffed by onsite medical personnel 24 hours a day. In addition, the jail employs numerous mental health professionals and staffs various housing units for those with enhanced needs.
