News Release
Suspect Facing Robbery and Assault Charges Following Downtown Shooting - 06/22/24

A suspect is in jail on felony assault and robbery charges following an injury shooting.

On Saturday, June 22, 2024 at 12:37a.m., a Portland Police Sergeant assigned to Central Precinct was at Southwest 14th Avenue and Southwest Taylor Street when she was flagged down by a group on the corner. She saw that a man was injured in the leg and learned that the 28-year-old victim had just been shot. The sergeant saw two suspects running from the scene, a female and a male. She broadcast the situation and suspect descriptions over her police radio to other officers, who immediately responded. About 4 minutes later, an officer spotted a suspect in the area of Southwest 19th Avenue and West Burnside Street. The officer and cover units detained her. An adult male was also detained but was later determined to be unrelated and released.

At the same time, the sergeant applied a tourniquet to the victim’s leg to control bleeding. Portland Fire & Rescue and AMR paramedics arrived to provide advanced care, and the victim was transported to the hospital by ambulance with a non-life-threatening injury.

Officers learned that the two suspects robbed the three victims at gunpoint. In addition to shooting the male in the leg, the suspect assaulted a 35-year-old female victim by striking her in the head with the pistol. She declined medical transport. The third victim, a 46-year-old male, suffered a scrape to his neck, possibly from shrapnel.

Portland Police Major Crimes Unit Detectives responded to assist with the investigation. The suspect, Jayda Z. Wise, 20, of Portland, also known as Demarion Z. Wise, was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on charges of Robbery in the First Degree (3 counts) and Assault in the First Degree.

The investigation is continuing and detectives are still seeking the second suspect. If anyone has information about this incident, please e-mail crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov attn: Major Crimes Unit and reference case number 24-153786.
