Suspect Recklessly Eludes Police, Burglarizes Home, Arrested on Felony Charges - 06/10/24

A man is facing felony charges after recklessly eluding police at over 100 miles per hour, then running and entering a home before being caught by Portland Police officers.

On Friday, June 7, 2024 at 6:23p.m., East Precinct officers responded to a report of a stolen green 2010 Subaru Outback station wagon being driven by a known person who has a history of illegal gun possession. Officers on the ground and the Air Support Unit (ASU) responded and located the vehicle near the area of Southeast 122nd Avenue and Southeast Powell Boulevard (case #24 140251).

The vehicle’s driver eluded and he began driving extremely recklessly. ASU observed the driving behavior as the vehicle’s driver, Dalton J. Williams, 24, of Beaverton, eluded police for more than 20 minutes. He sped through Southeast Portland, Gresham and Northeast Portland, on freeways, arterials, neighborhood streets, even on the shoulder and in a bike lane. During that time, the driver exceeded 110 miles per hour. The vehicle almost caused several crashes. The vehicle disregarded multiple traffic control devices and created an extreme hazard to many community members around the Portland metro area. Officers made significant efforts to try to use spike strips and coordinate other intervention techniques, while also trying to minimize the danger to the community caused by the suspect.

Williams finally crashed head-on into a Portland Police vehicle occupied by two officers. The officers were driving west on Northeast Knott Street with their emergency lights activated as they approached Northeast 16th Avenue in order to get in place to deploy spike strips. The suspect ran on foot after the crash and briefly entered a house in the 2700 block of Northeast 15th Avenue. He was challenged by a K9 officer and a custody team and he surrendered.

Video of the suspect’s alarming driving behavior can be found here: https://youtu.be/VAy70IRbGUI

Williams was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on the following charges:

-Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle
-Attempt to Elude Police Officer by Vehicle
-Attempt to Elude Police Officer on Foot
-Burglary in the First Degree
-Reckless Driving
-Driving while Suspended or Revoked (Misdemeanor)
-Failure to Perform the Duties of a Driver (Property Damage)
-Criminal Mischief in the First Degree
-Warrants

Fortunately, there were no known injuries as a result of the suspect’s dangerous behavior.
