UPDATE: MAX Train Stabbing Victim Identified (Photo) - 04/03/24

The man killed on a MAX train on Friday, March 29, 2024, has been identified as Michael Matthew Brady, 51, of Portland. Brady’s family has been notified of his death. They are requesting privacy at this time, but they did provide the attached photo for public release, as well as a statement about Brady.

“I want people to know that my husband was a great human being, a loving father of a 6-year-old boy, and a loving husband,” Nora Brady said. “Michael Brady was a wonderful person.”

A Medical Examiner determined Brady died of homicide by stab wounds to the torso.

Through witness interviews and a review of the train’s surveillance video, detectives have determined this was an unprovoked attack. Brady, commuting home from work, and the suspect were sitting near each other on the train, but they had no contact prior to the assault.

The Portland Police Bureau recognizes the traumatic nature of this incident for everyone riding the train that evening. PPB would like to acknowledge and thank the passengers who came to Brady’s aid and then spoke with detectives. Additionally, PPB believes there are witnesses who left the scene before police arrived. Anyone with information about this case, who has not yet spoken to police, is asked to contact Detective Shaye Samora at Shaye.Samora@police.portlandoregon.gov or Detective Michael Schmerber at Michael.Schmerber@police.portlandoregon.gov and reference case number 24-77028.
