The pedestrian who was injured in a collision with a vehicle on September 16, 2023 at Southeast 82nd Avenue and Southeast Crystal Springs Boulevard is identified as Morgan A. Helms, 30. She died at the hospital on September 19th, 2023. The PPB Traffic Investigations Unit has confirmed that her family has been notified of her death. The investigation revealed Helms was crossing Southeast 82nd Avenue when she was struck. The involved driver was not charged or cited.
There have been 58 fatal traffic-related crashes in Portland this year. Twenty of these crashes have involved pedestrians. Portland fatal crashes counted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for this year is 57. NHTSA’s count excludes crashes involving suicide, private property, non-public roadways, non-motor vehicles, and deaths that happen more than 30 days after a crash.

On September 16, 2023 at approximately 9:10 p.m. officers from the East Precinct responded to the intersection of Southeast 82nd Avenue and Southeast Crystal Springs Boulevard for a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. Officers arrived and found a pedestrian with life threatening injuries. The driver of an involved vehicle stayed on scene. The pedestrian was transported to an area hospital but later died from their injuries.
The Major Crash Team was activated to begin an investigation. Southeast 82nd Ave will be closed for several hours at Southeast Lambert Street as Traffic Officers and Investigators from the Traffic Investigation Unit (TIU)collect evidence and process the scene.
