UPDATE: Officer Involved in St Johns Neighborhood Shooting Identified - 07/27/22

The officer involved in this shooting is identified as Officer Kyle Roush, a 5-year veteran of the Portland Police Bureau.

More information will be released when appropriate, as this investigation continues.

On July 26, 2022, at 1:12 AM, officers from the North Precinct responded to the 6700 block of North Fessenden Street on reports of a shot being fired. A witness reported hearing a shot in the area. Another witness reported hearing a shot, seeing the flash from a gun, and thought they may have just witnessed a homicide.

Officers arrived and located a person they believed to be involved. Officers attempted to contact the suspect who was associated with a truck. During the incident, the suspect rammed a police car with the truck. The suspect then appeared to attempt run over the officer who was on foot. The officer then fired at the driver.

Another officer attempted to stop the suspect with his patrol car. The suspect hit that police car and drove off. A pursuit of the vehicle began and shortly after the officer lost the vehicle in the St Johns Neighborhood. The suspect was not located and it is unknown if he was injured during the incident.

Per policy, the Portland Police Homicide Unit is on scene and investigating. The investigation into this incident is ongoing. Investigators are expected to be here for several hours collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses. During which, North Fessenden Street will be closed from North Columbia Way to North Macrum Avenue. Additional information will be released at the direction of investigators.

"I am pleased that our officers were not injured this morning. We will complete a thorough investigation into this morning’s incident and I know detectives will work diligently to locate the suspect involved," said Deputy Chief Frome, who responded to the scene.

The Mayor's office was notified of this incident.

As part of the use of force review process, the Bureau will conduct an internal review of the entire incident, including the initial response, resources requested, tactics used, and post shooting actions. The case will go before the Police Review Board (PRB), which is composed of community members, Bureau members, and representatives from the Independent Police Review Division.
