###ORIGINAL MESSAGES BELOW###

Investigators believe another vehicle was likely involved in the fatal crash overnight at Northeast Sandy Boulevard and Northeast 149th Avenue, and they are asking the public for information.

Evidence at the scene suggests the vehicle that remained at the scene was not involved in the crash. The driver was interviewed and released. The deceased rider was operating a Lime electric scooter. She will be identified after next of kin is notified. There’s no information about the other vehicle involved, but the investigation is continuing.

If anyone has any information about this crash, the suspect vehicle, or saw anything immediately preceding it, please contact Traffic Investigations Unit Officer Chris Johnson at Chris.Johnson@portlandoregon.gov or 503-823-2213.

This incident marks the grim milestone of doubling the number of traffic related fatalities as this time last year. This is the 26th traffic fatality for 2021 in the City of Portland. This is a 100% increase over this time last year when there were 13. Despite reduced traffic numbers in 2020 due to COVID-19, it was still our highest number of traffic fatalities in 3 decades.

Frequent contributing factors to traffic crashes are speed, impairment by alcohol or drugs, and distracted driving. Please drive sober, pay attention while behind the wheel, and do not exceed the posted speeds.
