UPDATE: Second Driver in I-5 Crash Dies, Crash Involved Wrong Way Vehicle - 04/17/21

Despite lifesaving efforts at the hospital, the second driver involved in the crash on Northbound I-5 at North Greeley Avenue has died. There were no other injuries. The involved drivers were both adult males. Their names will be released after their families have been notified.

The on-scene investigation (photo) has concluded and the freeway reopened to traffic at about 9:00a.m. Preliminary investigation indicates that one of the involved vehicles was driving southbound in the northbound lanes and struck the other vehicle head-on.

A fatal crash on Northbound Interstate 5 at North Greeley Avenue has the freeway closed for an investigation.

On Saturday, April 17, 2021 at 5:16a.m., North Precinct officers were dispatched to a report of a serious injury crash on Northbound I5 at North Greeley Avenue. When officers and paramedics arrived, they discovered that two vehicles had collided and one driver was deceased. Another driver was transported by ambulance to the hospital with serious injuries.

The Portland Police Major Crash Team is responding to investigate. While they do their work, northbound I5 traffic is being detoured onto I405.

More information will be released as investigators learn more. The PIO is not responding to the scene.
