###ORIGINAL MESSAGES BELOW###

A suspect driver is facing criminal charges after striking and killing two pedestrians on Interstate-5 freeway Saturday morning.

Preliminary investigation by the Major Crash Team suggests that the two pedestrians, both adult females, had been in a SUV that broke down on the freeway's right shoulder. Another vehicle had stopped in the center of the freeway split between southbound I-5 and southbound I-405 (Fremont Bridge) to assist them. They were unable to get the SUV started. They were crossing the traffic lanes to reach the other vehicle when they were struck by a 2016 Ford Fusion driving southbound. A third pedestrian, an adult male, was uninjured.

The driver of the Ford was Michael A. Hanson, 25, of Portland. Hanson was determined by officers to be driving impaired and he was arrested. Hanson was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on charges of Criminally Negligent Homicide (2 counts) and Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants.

The identities of the victims are being withheld pending notification of their families.

The southbound lanes of the freeway were closed until approximately 9:45a.m. These are the 41st and 42nd traffic related deaths in the city of Portland this year. This crash was the third fatal crash in the city within a 24 hour time frame.
