UPDATE: Identity of Motorcyclist Killed in Freeway Crash Released - 10/11/20

The motorcyclist who died in the crash is identified as Brian J. Stafford, 24. His family has been notified of his death.

The crash investigation determined that Stafford was riding a Kawasaki motorcycle in the left lane of Interstate-5 just north of North Lombard Street. Traffic stopped and Stafford was unable to stop in time. He fell off the motorcycle and struck the back of a Nissan Leaf. The motorcycle did not strike the Nissan. Stafford was transported to a hospital where he died.

The driver of the Nissan remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. No citations were issued.

This is Portland's 40th traffic related fatality of 2020. Since this crash there have been two more traffic deaths, not including another fatality where cause of death has not been determined.

A motorcyclist died in the hospital after a crash on I-5 freeway in North Portland.

On Friday, October 9, 2020 at 5:45p.m., North Precinct officers were dispatched to a report of a crash on northbound Interstate 5 near North Columbia Boulevard. When they arrived they located a motorcycle down. The rider was transported by ambulance to a hospital, where lifesaving measures were taken. However the rider was pronounced deceased.

Another vehicle involved in the crash stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. No arrests have been made.

The Portland Police Bureau Traffic Division Major Crash Team responded. During the investigation, the left lane of northbound I-5 was closed between North Lombard Street and North Columbia Boulevard.
