News Release
Correction: Bicyclist Dies Days After Crash - 09/11/20

According to someone who knows this cyclist, he died on September 6, 2020. Police received this information days later, resulting in an earlier release headline misstating the number of days that passed between the collision and his death.

Additionally, investigators in this case believe, based on the evidence, the cyclist may not have come to a complete stop before entering the roadway.

On September 3, 2020, at approximately 9:44 a.m., East Precinct officers responded to the 9200 block of Southeast Market Street on reports of an injury accident. Officers arrived on scene and learned a cyclist had been travelling northbound along the bike path parallel to I-205 near Southeast 92nd Avenue. As the cyclist began to cross Southeast Market Street, he failed to stop before entering the cross street and was struck by a driver.

A witness who provided first hand observations stated the vehicle was not speeding at all and had very little, if no time at all, to react to the cyclist crossing the roadway. The cyclist was transported to a non-trauma hospital where it was determined he had a small brain bleed.
On September 9, 2020, an officer who investigated the crash was notified the cyclist had succumbed from his injuries sustained during the incident.

The cyclist who died as result of the fatal crash has been identified as 81-year-old Martin Weiner. His next of kin has been notified.

This is the 33rd traffic fatality within the City of Portland for 2020.
