Sometime overnight from July 3 to 4, 2020, an estimated $10,000 worth of fireworks were stolen from a container located at the Fred Meyer at 6850 N Lombard Street. The Peninsula Optimist Club operated this fundraising booth in collaboration with youth groups. The money earned from the sale of the fireworks was intended to directly benefit local youth groups and community organizations in North Portland.
This morning, volunteers with the Roosevelt High School soccer and baseball teams began showing up for their volunteer shifts at the firework stand. They were disappointed and saddened to learn all of the fireworks they were supposed to sell today were stolen overnight. The lock on the container was damaged and multiple cases of fireworks were taken. July 4th is the busiest and most productive day for firework sales for the club.
The cases of fireworks have distinct labels, including "Peninsula Optimists Club" and the Fred Meyer name and address on them (PHOTO).
"The Peninsula Optimist Club has been providing support for youth and community members for over 74 years in the North Portland Community," said Operations Manager John Teuscher. "To learn of the theft this morning is deflating and sad because everyone works so hard to make this happen. These fundraisers benefit families and kids who do not have the means to play sports. The fund helps to pay for equipment and fees so youth can participate in community sports."
"This theft has resounding impacts in the community, as the Peninsula Optimist Club is a prime example of a group who invests and supports the underserved in our community," said Chief Chuck Lovell. "I hope those involved will hear this and re-consider and return the items. The Peninsula Optimist Club has two other fireworks stands open today; one is located at the Hollywood Fred Meyer and the other at the Optimist tree lot at North Lombard Street/Chautauqua Avenue.
