Vehicle Strikes Person Sleeping in Tent - 11/02/19

A driver was cited after veering off a freeway onramp and striking a victim sleeping in a tent.

On Saturday, November 2, 2019 at 4:37 a.m., East Precinct officers were dispatched to a report of a crash involving a vehicle and a person. When they arrived they located a female victim with injuries to her legs. She was transported to a hospital by ambulance and it was determined she had at least one fractured leg. Her injuries were not life threatening.

The driver remained on the scene and cooperated with the investigation. Officers determined that she was merging onto I-205 northbound from Southeast Division Street. She failed to negotiate a curve in the road, struck a sign, and then drove into a tent that was in a grassy area off the road. The victim was among three people in the tent. The other two were not injured.

The driver, Shayla Valdez, 20, of Portland, was cited for Careless Driving. She showed no signs of impairment.

Each year, traffic officers respond to preventable collisions. These collisions can deeply impact those involved, their families and loved ones. Traffic officers' number one priority is to address behaviors of all road users that might lead to a collision, including speed, impairment, distraction, and disobeying signals.
