Garages & Garden Sheds:

The Portland Police Bureau and the Community & Civic Life's Crime Prevention Coordinators would like to offer community members some helpful tips to reduce the occurrence of garage and shed burglaries.

* Lock garages and sheds when you are not able to monitor these areas. Tools, bicycles, and other items are often stolen out of an open garage while a resident gardens in the backyard or takes a break inside of the house.
* If your neighbors' garage door remains open for an extended period of time or is left open at night, let them know. They probably aren't aware and you can help keep your neighborhood safe from opportunistic thieves.
* Secure tools and climbing devices such as ladders since these can be used to access vulnerable areas of your home.
* Install locks on gates to your backyard to prevent easy access to the area.
* Report suspicious activity happening in your neighborhood to the police by calling 9-1-1.
* Report all incidents of theft by calling the Police Non-Emergency Line at 503-823-3333 or by reporting online by visiting http://www.portlandpolice.com
