Introducing The New Transit Police Division K9 (Photo) - 05/15/19

On Tuesday, May 14th, 2019, Sergeant Matt Engen and his new K9 partner "Sem" graduated from the Transportation Security Administration Explosive Detection Canine Handler Course. K9 Sem is a 20 month old purebred male Belgian Malinois. Sergeant Engen is a 24 year veteran of the Portland Police Bureau and has been assigned to the Transit Division for nearly 9 years.

Sergeant Engen and K9 Sem trained together for 12 weeks at Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA)- Lackland in San Antonio, Texas. K9 Sem is trained to detect and alert on explosives odor. Upon graduation, Sergeant Engen was awarded the "Top Dog" handler award for his outstanding achievement while attending the course.

Sergeant Engen and K9 Sem will work daily to ensure the safety of the Trimet mass transportation system. Along with proactively patrolling the area's buses and trains, they will be available to respond to special events and dignitary visits.

K9 Sem will live with Sergeant Engen.

If media would like to meet Sem, he will make an appearance at the Rose Quarter Transit Center on Monday, May 20th at 9:00 a.m.
