UPDATE: Deceased Person Identified in Saturday Afternoon Fatal Traffic Crash on NE Airport Wy - 01/07/19

The pedestrian who died after being struck by a vehicle near Northeast Airport Way and Northeast Mason Street has been identified as 34-year-old Rachelle D. Cox, of Portland.

Preliminary information suggests Cox was walking on a sidewalk next to Northeast Airport Way when the driver of a Subaru Legacy left the roadway and struck Cox. Officers located the driver of the Subaru. The Subaru was seized as evidence.

Members of the Major Crash Team continue to investigate this fatal traffic crash in cooperation with the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office and Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office. Once members of the Major Crash Team have completed the investigation, the case will be forwarded to the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office for consideration.

On Saturday, January 5, 2019, at 2:55 p.m., North Precinct officers responded to Northeast Airport Way near Northeast Mason Street on the report that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle.

Officers and emergency medical responders arrived on scene and found an injured pedestrian lying on the ground. Emergency medical personnel determined the pedestrian was deceased.

A caller to 9-1-1 provided an emergency call-taker information about the vehicle believed to be involved in this crash. Officers responded to the location provided by the caller and located the vehicle and driver near Northeast Airport Way and Northeast Riverside Parkway.

Members with the Portland Police Bureau Traffic Division's Major Crash Team are responding to lead this investigation. Criminalists with the Forensic Evidence Division are also responding to assist with this Major Crash Team investigation.

During this traffic crash investigation, Northeast Airport Way will be closed between Northeast Mason Street and Northeast Riverside Parkway. The closure will likely be in effect for the next four to six hours.

It is early in this fatal traffic crash investigation, at this time there is no additional information to provide regarding the crash. More information will be provided as more is learned about this fatal traffic crash investigation.

This is the second fatal traffic crash investigated by the Portland Police Bureau Traffic Division's Major Crash Team in the City of Portland in 2019.
