Sunshine Division and Fred Meyer Team Up to Sack Hunger (Photo) - 07/11/18

On Thursday, July 12, 2018 the Sunshine Division and Raleigh Hills Fred Meyer store will be partnering to "sack hunger" by selling $5 "Sunshine Sacks" in-store at registers. The $5 bags will contain core food items to donate to families in need this summer. Childhood hunger issues swell during summer months when low-income children qualifying for free and reduced breakfast and lunch programs at public schools are suddenly without upwards of ten meals a week. The "Sunshine Sack" program is another key way for Sunshine Division to work with long-standing partners in the community to address core food insecurity issues.

"Fred Meyer has been a partner of the Portland Police Bureau Sunshine Division for over 9 decades. In recent years they've played a larger role in the clothing aspect of our mission as a significant contributor to our Izzy's Kids Shop With a Cop program. We're excited to work together on the 'Sunshine Sack' program to raise food and awareness of summertime hunger issues in our local community," said Officer Matt Tobey, Sunshine Division's bureau liaison with the Portland Police Bureau.

"Sunshine Division is a great partner in our Zero Hunger / Zero Waste journey. We are proud to have supported their community efforts for many years, and I am excited that we have this opportunity to make a difference with the Sunshine Sack program," said Joe Grieshaber, President of Fred Meyer Stores.

Community members wanting to support Sunshine Division's food assistance programs are encouraged to visit the Raleigh Hills Fred Meyer store at 7700 SW Beaverton Hillsdale Hwy, Portland, OR 97225 to purchase the $5 bags for donation. Fred Bear will be handing out balloons, coloring books, and nylon Fred Bear backpacks for kids while supplies last.
