27 Citations Issued During Monday Evening #VisionZero Traffic Safety Mission on SW Barbur Blvd (Photo) - 05/22/18

On Monday, May 21, 2018, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., members of the Portland Police Bureau's Traffic Division conducted a Vision Zero traffic safety mission along Southwest Barbur Boulevard between Southwest Hamilton Street and Southwest Terwilliger Boulevard.

Officers focused on dangerous behaviors and the officers were free to make traffic stops on drivers, pedestrians and bicycle riders as they saw appropriate. The officers were encouraged to share information about the Vision Zero program during these contacts. As always, officers were allowed the discretion to issue citations, warnings or classes. This area of Southwest Barbur Boulevard includes heavily traveled bike lanes, bus stops and a crosswalk that was the location of a pedestrian fatality several years ago.

During this traffic safety mission, 27 citations were issued. One citation was issued to a motorist that an officer observed traveling 58 miles per hour in a posted 35 mile per hour zone.

The Traffic Division will be conducting future enforcement missions as staffing allows.

The Portland Police Bureau is committed to working with our partners in government and the community to create safer streets and work towards reducing, and eventually eliminating, traffic fatalities as part of Vision Zero.
