On Thursday, April 12, 2018, at 9:27 a.m., East Precinct officers and investigators with the Portland Police Bureau Traffic Division's Traffic Investigation Unit arrested 30-year-old Abduraham S. Abubaker at a residence in the 12200 block of Southeast Ramona Street.
This investigation began on Friday, April 6, 2018, at 7:07 p.m., when Central Precinct officers responded to the report of a vehicle/bicyclist crash near Southeast Gladstone Street and Southeast Cora Drive. The bicycle rider was assessed by medical personnel at the scene and was later transported to an area hospital by private vehicle.
During the investigation, officers spoke with witnesses and the bicycle rider. Officers learned the driver of a blue Dodge Stratus turned south onto Southeast Cora Drive from eastbound Southeast Gladstone Street and collided with the bicyclist. After the crash, the driver of the Dodge drove away, leaving the injured bicyclist on the roadway. Community members assisted the injured bicycle rider, contacted police and emergency medical personnel, and remained at the scene to provide important information to officers.
Additional officers responded to the area and based on information learned at the crash scene, located and seized the involved blue Dodge Stratus in the 3500 block of Southeast Cora Drive. The suspected hit and run driver was not located on the day of the crash.
As the investigation continued, officers learned information that identified the suspected hit and run driver as Abubaker. Based on information learned during the investigation Abubaker was taken into custody.
Abubaker was lodged at the Multnomah County Jail on charges of Assault in the Third Degree, Reckless Endangering Another Person, Reckless Driving, and Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants.
