UPDATE: Driver Dies of Injuries Sustained During January 12 Crash - 01/18/18

The driver of a vehicle that was found crashed on eastbound Interstate 84 near Exit 9 on Friday, January 12, 2018 has died of injuries sustained during the crash.

The driver was identified as 27-year-old Nathaniel Lee Teneyck of Gresham, OR. Teneyck is believed to have been the only occupant of the vehicle at the time of the crash. Teneyck died at an area hospital on Monday, January 15, 2018.

Teneyck's death is the first traffic related fatality in Portland in 2018.

On Friday, January 12, 2018, at 12:06 a.m., East Precinct and Traffic Division officers responded to the report of a single vehicle crash near Exit 9 on eastbound Interstate 84.

Officers arrived on scene and located a white Honda Civic that had been involved in a crash and an adult male being administered CPR by community members. Emergency medical personnel arrived and provided the man medical aid prior to transporting him to an area hospital by ambulance. Based on initial information, emergency medical personnel believed the man sustained serious life-threatening injuries.

Investigators believe the injured adult male was the only occupant of the Honda Civic.

The Portland Police Bureau Traffic Division's Major Crash Team has responded to investigate this crash. Criminalists with the Police Bureau's Forensic Evidence Division have also responded to assist with this investigation.

Currently, the ramp to northbound Interstate 205 from eastbound Interstate 84 and one lane of eastbound Interstate 84 prior to Exit 9 are closed. The closures will likely be in effect for the next three to four hours.

The Portland Police Bureau is committed to working with our partners in government and the community to create safer streets and work towards reducing, and eventually eliminating, traffic fatalities as part of Vision Zero.
