On Monday November 20, 2017, at 10:22 a.m., Central Precinct officers responded to the report of a man threatening to jump from a tree at Tom McCall Waterfront Park.

Officers arrived in the area and attempted to speak with the man. As officers tried to communicate with the man in the tree, additional officers worked to contact the man's family to gain a better understanding of the crisis.

Portland Fire and Rescue and emergency medical personnel were also requested to the scene.

Officers talked with the man for approximately one hour and 15 minutes until he agreed to come out of the tree and go to the hospital for treatment.

Help is available for community members struggling from a mental health crisis and/or suicidal thoughts. Suicide is preventable.
