MEDIA ADVISORY: Portland Bureau Of Planning And Sustainability Invites Members Of The Media To Attend The Opening Of W.E.B. Du Bois And The Digital Griots Art Exhibition, Thursday, Aug. 1 -07/30/24

Portland, Ore.— The Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability (BPS) is pleased to invite members of the Portland media to an event celebrating the opening of its W.E.B. Du Bois and the Digital Griots Art Exhibition.
WHO: The event will feature three speakers:
- Suenn Ho, Urban Designer, RESOLVE Architecture + Planning
- Valeria Tapia, City Planner, Bureau of Planning and Sustainability
- Leesha Posey, Division Manager, Portland Permitting & Development
The event will also feature special guests from:
- Latino Network
- Urban League Portland
- IRCO
- APANO
- NTEN
- AfroVillage
BPS Open Data and Privacy Coordinator, Hector Dominguez-Aguirre will serve as the event emcee.
WHAT: Art and Data Exhibition featuring pieces of W.E.B. Du Bois’ life, work and award-winning data portraits for the 1900 Paris exhibit.

WHEN: Thursday, Aug. 1, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
BACKGROUND: The exhibition is sponsored by BPS’s Smart City PDX team and is led by the Open Data program. It was curated by a team of staff at BPS and will run from Aug. 1 to Oct. 18. Young Portlanders and students of color in high school are strongly encouraged to participate in the W.E.B. Du Bois and the Digital Griot Open Data Challenge. For the challenge, students will create their own data stories about their lives and experience while illustrating the untold stories of Portland’s communities of color.
