Mayor joins Mt. Carmel to honor 400 Military/Veteran families today - 09/06/19

Mayor John Suthers is the featured speaker at opening ceremonies for the Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center Patriot Day Give Back today at Mt. Carmel. The event is Mt. Carmel’s annual recognition of the sacrifice military, veterans and their families have made, and continue to make, before and since the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

“Mt. Carmel is proud to conduct this event and we’re thankful for the support of the Mayor, our generous sponsors, the Norris-Penrose event center, and our event volunteers," said Retired Army Colonel Bob McLaughlin, Mt. Carmel Chief Operating Officer.

The community is welcome to join events including a Resource Fair with breakfast and opening ceremonies. The Patriot Day Give Back Event itself is restricted to the 400 military and veteran families with participation vouchers. Families receive approximately two weeks of fresh produce, groceries, common personal hygiene items and lightly-used sporting equipment.

Mt. Carmel reached out to community partners and local military installations to pre-register 400 receiving families and individuals, the estimated maximum capacity of the event. Following opening ceremonies, recipients will drive up and present a pre-issued voucher to receive their gifts.

Any extra food and goods will be provided to local veteran-focused non-profit organizations with food pantries. Mt. Carmel partnered with Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes, Feed the Children, and Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado to conduct the annual event.

The day includes three related events:

Resource Fair & Breakfast, 7 a.m., - Community members are welcome to hear about services and partnered programs offered at Mt. Carmel. Breakfast Burritos, coffee and juice offered for a recommended donation of $5.

Opening Ceremony, 8 a.m., - Community members are welcome to hear remarks recognizing the significance of the day and purpose of the event from Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers, with introduction and comments from Retired Army Col. Bob McLaughlin, Mt. Carmel Chief Operating Officer.

Patriot Day Give Back Event, 9 a.m. - The event is across the street from the Mt. Carmel Campus and provides approximately 400 families and individuals from the local military and veteran community with a substantial gift of non-perishable food, personal hygiene items, and sporting goods. *Participation is limited to those military and veterans able to present an event voucher.

**As of Friday morning, a handful of vouchers remain available at Mt. Carmel.
