Unfounded Rumor Of Threatened School Violence Silently Quashed - 10/06/22

At approximately 7:31 PM on Wednesday, October 52022, the Junction City Police Department was notified by the SafeOregon tip line that an Oaklea Middle School student reported overhearing another student make unspecified threats of violence that was supposed to occur on Thursday, October 6th.

Working in unison with school district personnel, police department investigators were able to rapidly identify and make contact with the involved student and their parents.  The investigation revealed the threat was not credible and at no time was there any risk to the community.  Both parents and the student were extremely cooperative and all information indicates the student acted alone.  Investigators determined the student made the comment to a group of five (5) other students, all of which were also identified and subsequently contacted along with their parents.

This is a case where a student made a very poorly chosen comment that was clearly taken out of context with no intent to commit any violence.  However, this incident stands as a chief example of how dangerous this type of activity is and underscores the fact every such incident will be taken seriously, investigated vigorously, and will result in rapid and decisive action.  Superintendent Stoops stated, “This is a good time to have a discussion with your child about how serious inappropriate comments can be in our schools, even when they are unintentional or just joking with friends.”

The department would like to thank School Superintendent Troy Stoops, his staff, and those who notified the SafeOregon tip line, which all enabled this incident to be brought to a rapid close with no unnecessary fear or panic being spread through the community.

The Junction City Police Department has developed and constantly nurtures a strong and positive working relationship with the Junction City School District.  While we are confident no threat exists, there will be a highly visible police presence at the Junction City Schools today to ensure all staff, students, parents, and visitors feel safe and protected.
