Animal Control Reminder To License Your Dog (Photo) -06/29/21

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. - The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is reminding everyone that dogs in the county must be licensed. Having an unlicensed dog can result in fines which are steeper than the cost of the license itself.

Oregon State law requires every person owning or keeping a dog to purchase a county dog license when the dog is six months of age or grows its permanent canine teeth, which ever comes first; or within 30 days of becoming owner or keeper; or within 30 days of moving into the county.

Failing to register a dog can result in a $265.00 fine under the state statute, and $144 under the county ordinance.

"One of the biggest reasons the licensing requirement is in place is to ensure public health issues, like rabies, do not become a rampant problem in the community," says Animal Control Deputy Lee Bartholomew.

A license may be purchased for up to three years, based upon the expiration of the rabies certificate.

ALTERED:
One-Year License: $10
Three-Year License $20

UNALTERED:
One-Year License: $40
Three Year License: $80

Residents aged 65 years or older are also eligible for a discounted rate with proof of ownership and identification.

For the altered licese rate, you must have a spay or neuter certificate with a complete description of the dog to obtain the discounted license rate for altered dogs.

To receive a dog license, an owner must provide a valid rabies inoculation certificate issued and signed by the veterinarian at the time of licensing. The dog license will expire when the rabies certificate expires if licensing is less than one year.

You can purchase a dog license at the Sheriff's Office (1036 SE Douglas Ave #210, Roseburg, OR 97470) or most of the veterinary offices throughout the county. If you have questions, you can contact the Sheriff's Office at (541) 440-4450.
