Sutherlin Man Arrested for Setting Fires, Interfering with Firefighter - 07/29/20

GLIDE, Ore. - A Sutherlin man was arrested for starting six fires in the forest Tuesday night.

Around midnight, deputies were notified that Douglas Forest Protective Association had been dispatched to a reported fire northeast of Glide near McComas Creek. When firefighters arrived in the area they located an individual who was armed with a machete. The male subject wanted the firefighters to give him a ride into Glide and told them if they didn't he would set additional fires.

Deputies arrived and located the male, later identified as 39 year-old Jedediah Ezekiel Fulton of Sutherlin. Fulton was still armed with a machete. He was eventually taken into custody and admitted to setting multiple fires in the area. He told deputies he had been in the forest for approximately 3 hours and was attempting to get help.

Fulton was transported to the Douglas County Jail where he was lodged on the following crimes, although additional charges may be pending.

  • Reckless Burning
  • Interfering with a Firefighter
  • Menacing

DFPA  stated they located a total of six fires in the McComas Creek area with the largest fire around a quarter acre in size. The combined total of all six fires are estimated to be around one acre. Crews remained on scene of the McComas Creek Fires overnight, mopping up hot spots and securing control lines.
