Vancouver, WA--YWCA Clark County is partnering with the NAACP Vancouver to express the community’s grief and outrage over the insistent racism experienced by Black people and people of color in the U.S.
The organizations are responding to the murder by Minneapolis police of a Black man, George Floyd, and the deaths of other Black people over the last decade. They are co-hosting a Car Rally for Black Lives to protest the systemic police brutality that continues to plague the lives of Black people.
Members of the community are invited to participate in this peaceful demonstration by meeting at noon on Saturday at 5411 E. Mill Plain Blvd. (Town Plaza Parking lot). The rally will conclude at the Port of Vancouver Terminal 1 (parking lot across from Warehouse 23). Participants are required to remain in their vehicles. You can register for it here.
The national YWCA has issued a statement on Mr. Floyd’s murder, which says, in part: “Together with YWCA Minneapolis and YWCA St. Paul, over 200 YWCAs across the country unite to answer the cry for justice, peace, and dignity for all. YWCA continues to call for dismantling systemic racism and equal protection and opportunity under the law through its public policy and advocacy work.”
The NAACP Vancouver has established a community memorial site for George Floyd where residents can come to share their grief and anger triggered by this latest example of the price people of color pay for this nation’s institutional racism. The memorial is at YWCA Clark County in the courtyard facing Main Street (3609 Main Street, Vancouver).
The NAACP is asking citizens to sign a petition calling for major reforms designed to address racism in the U.S. The core reforms requested include:
-
Deliberate and intentional Criminal Justice Reform that ensures the protection of Black lives, the expansion of the Home Confinement Pilot Program under the First Step Act, and a reduction in sentence for non-offenders.
-
Expansive student loan relief to include a suspension of student loan payment until the economy gains strength, discharge of student loans for essential workers, and automatic cancellation of at least $20,000 in federal student loan debt for all.
-
Expansion of Medicaid as a short-term measure to cover healthcare for those who are impacted by the pandemic.
-
Federal funding for states to improve election administration and upgrade voting systems that comply with the CDC standard regarding COVID-19.
YWCA Clark County was also disturbed and angered by what appeared to be either racist or extremely insensitive remarks made via social media by former Clark County School Board Member Mark Stoker last week. Stoker's remarks--made while he was on the board--were in reference to protests to Mr. Floyd's murder in Seattle. He resigned in the wake of rebukes from community members over his remarks. YWCA partners with the public schools on programs designed to eliminate racism, sexual assault and domestic violence.
“We cannot tolerate such insensitive behavior from elected officials,” said Jasmine Tolbert, Vice President of Public Policy for YWCA Clark County. “We hope this can be a learning opportunity for Mr. Stoker and the board of education.”
