Newberg Man Arrested On Attempted Murder Of A Child - 06/16/21
Yesterday, at approximately 10:30 a.m., Yamhill County Sheriff's Office deputies and Newberg-Dundee Police responded to a call of a child who had been shot at 23635 NE Sunnycrest Road in rural Newberg. While en route, they learned that the suspect, 46-year-old Shane Earl Rader, was the biological father of the victim, and had fled the residence in a dark colored van. Rader took the 3-year-old victim and his 6-year-old brother with him.
Deputies were familiar with the location and knew Rader had been arrested for assault and violating a no-contact order the night prior. He had been lodged in the Yamhill County Correctional Facility and later posted bail on those charges.
At about 10:45 a.m., dispatch advised that both boys had been dropped off at the Newberg Providence Hospital Emergency Department, but their father had left.
At about 10:55 a.m. Rader was located and stopped by Newberg-Dundee Police on Parrett Mountain Road near Haugen Road, just east of Newberg. He was detained and transferred into the custody of Yamhill County Deputies. His vehicle was seized for processing.
Detectives from the Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Unit and Newberg-Dundee Police Department processed the scene and interviewed witnesses. The investigation indicates Rader unlawfully entered the residence, became involved in a domestic violence altercation with the mother of his children and threatened to kill the family.
During this altercation, he shot his youngest son in the head with a high-powered pellet rifle. The pellet entered the skull, causing significant injury. The child was transported via helicopter to Legacy Emanuel Hospital where he has undergone surgery and is in serious condition.
Rader was lodged in the Yamhill County Correctional Facility on probable cause for the following crimes:
-2 counts of Attempted Aggravated Murder
-3 counts of Attempted Murder
-Assault in the First Degree
-Burglary in the First Degree
-Domestic Violence Strangulation
-Domestic Violence Felony Assault IV
-3 counts of Menacing
-3 counts of Unlawful Use of a Weapon
-Criminal Mistreatment
-Violation of Release Agreement for Assault IV
-Violation of Release Agreement for Reckless Endangering
Rader is currently being held without bail.
