Missing Dementia Patient Located with Use of YCSO Project Lifesaver Tracking Equipment (Photo) - 12/12/17

This morning, at approximately 9:00 a.m. Yamhill County Deputies, Yamhill County Sheriff's Office Volunteers, and the McMinnville Police Department responded to a report of a missing 60 year old male suffering from dementia. The patient had been last seen at a residential facility the night prior and his whereabouts were unknown. The extremely low temperatures made this situation more dire and emergent.

Because of the dementia related issues, the man was in possession of a "Project Lifesaver" wrist band, which is maintained by the Yamhill County Sheriff's Office. These wrist bands, which are used for dementia and Alzheimer's patients as well as some spectrums of autistic children, emits a radio frequency allowing it to be tracked by YCSO personnel using specialized equipment.

At about 11:30 a.m., after several hours of searching, one of the five YCSO members using a Project Lifesaver locating system began receiving a signal from the wristband. The missing subject was tracked and eventually located near the intersection of 2nd and Davis Streets in McMinnville. The subject was evaluated by medical personnel on scene and transported to the Willamette Valley Medical Center where he was treated for his exposure.

"The Yamhill County Sheriff's Office is one of eight agencies in the State of Oregon involved in the Project Lifesaver Program" said Sheriff Tim Svenson. "Situations like this, which occur in extreme temperatures, really reinforce how accurate the name of the program is. It truly can be a lifesaver".
