Tuesday, April 20, 2021-Woodland, WA-Woodland Public Schools announces that Woodland Middle School students will return to school full-time (five days a week) and Woodland High School students will return to school four days a week beginning Tuesday, April 27. Elementary schools will continue their current schedule of full-time in-person learning five days a week.
This newest transition in schedules comes following smooth transitions from remote learning to hybrid-learning schedules at the secondary schools. “We want to welcome our secondary students back to school on an expanded in-person learning schedule as we know how important live, in-person teaching is to student learning,” said Superintendent Michael Green. “We have been tracking local COVID-19 case rates closely for months, and even though case rates are higher in Cowlitz County as a whole, our part of the county has comparatively low case rates.”
With low local case rates, the district believes schools can hold more in-person learning safely. “Student health and safety remains the top priority for the school district,” said Green. “In order to keep our schools open, we ask our students and our community to keep up Covid-19 prevention techniques including wearing masks, maintaining physical distancing, and practicing good hygiene.”
In order to prepare for more expanded learning, Scott Landrigan, the district’s Director of Facilities and Safety, uses Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) software to develop seating plans for each classroom in every school building in the district. “In order for in-person learning to work while also preventing the spread of Covid-19, we must ensure we closely adhere to the health guidelines provided by the Washington State Department of Health, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the National Institute of Health (NIH) as well as our county health professionals,” explained Landrigan. “By using CAD, we can design safe classroom spaces for all students in all of the district’s facilities.”
