News Release

Summer Is Here! The West Linn Police Department Will Be Focusing On DUII And Seat Belt Enforcement - 06/23/21

Summer is finally here, and that means the West Linn Police Department will see an increase in minors consuming alcohol. MIP (Minor in Possession of Alcohol) parties and teenage intoxicated driving all spike during the summer months. Underage drinking statistics (from MADD) emphasize how serious a problem this is:

* Teen alcohol use kills 4,700 people each year-that's more than all illegal drugs combined.
* One in six teens binge drinks, yet only 1 in 100 parents believe his or her teen binge
drinks.
* Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens, and about a quarter of those crashes
involve an underage drinking driver.
* Kids who start drinking young are seven times more likely to be in an alcohol-related crash.
* High school students who use alcohol or other substances are five times more likely to
drop out of school.

The West Linn Police Department will be increasing DUII and Seat Belt enforcement this summer via grant funds through Oregon Impact and the Oregon Department of Transportation to keep our roads, and our teens, safe.
