Western Oregon University Board Of Trustees Approves New Minor, Welcomes New Member (Photo) - 01/19/18

MONMOUTH, Ore. -- The Western Oregon University Board of Trustees convened Wednesday, Jan. 17, for its quarterly meeting. The board welcomed new trustee Gayle Evans, chief human resources officer at Unitus Community Credit Union, to her inaugural meeting and approved a new minor in public history. The new minor is in the History department of the Social Sciences Division. The Public History minor will be directed by Associate Professor Patricia Goldsworthy-Bishop and would prepare students for future employment in archives, museums or any institution requiring establishment of historical record or interpretation and display for the public. Participating students will be required to engage in experiential learning opportunities such as an internship with a historical society. The program is expected to begin fall 2018. "We are pleased to offer this new, career-focused minor for students interested in history," said Provost Stephen Scheck. "Not only will it provide students with the opportunity to explore a different facet of history education, but it also will teach them how to use their passion for the subject to educate and delight audiences who might otherwise overlook the importance of our past." WOU has been working on a general education curricular update that would focus on a 180-credit-to-degree for all students. The plan, which combines well-rounded academic requirements with a definitive timeline to mitigate student debt and increase degree accessibility, has been progressing for about a year. At the meeting, it was announced that the plan had officially moved from the General Education Task Force to the Faculty Senate's General Education Committee; the proposal faces several steps before it is voted on. If approved, the new requirements would take effect in the fall of 2019. In other action, the board: * Recognized the WOU chapter of Student Veterans of America for its recent Chapter of the Year award, which was revealed earlier this month at the SVA national conference. * Approved the 2017 Annual Financial Report and the Q2 Management Report * Heard an update on the Campus Master Plan, the renovations of the Natural Science building and the repurposing of the former Oregon Military Academy building The next Board of Trustees meeting is set for April 18. About Western Oregon University Western Oregon University, founded in 1856 and located in Monmouth, is the state's oldest public university. Serving approximately 5,500 students, WOU is a mid-sized, NCAA Division II institution with nearly 80 percent of the student population being from Oregon. A significant portion of attendees are members of under-represented groups, veterans or non-traditional students. WOU is Oregon's campus of choice for those seeking a transformative education in a supportive, student-centered learning community where classes are taught by faculty. Together we succeed. # # #
