News Release
Location for downtown elementary school identified - 01/16/18

Vancouver Public Schools has identified a location for its planned downtown elementary school. The location, known as Library Square, is a vacant property at C Street and East 8th Street adjacent to the Vancouver Community Library.

The new elementary school will serve students in kindergarten through fifth grade and is one of the projects included in the bond measure approved by voters in February 2017.

Vancouver company Killian Pacific, which owns the property, has signed a letter of understanding with VPS to transfer a portion of the property for development as an elementary school. Killian Pacific has contributed a significant portion of the purchase price of the property as a public benefit.

VPS, the City of Vancouver and Killian Pacific are working together to master plan the entire parcel with the goal of adding greater vibrancy and community assets to the downtown area.

"We are excited about the school district's plans to locate a K-5 school on the Library Square site which will help serve downtown's growing residential population. The project creates opportunities for collaboration among the library, downtown businesses and community partners," said Chad Eiken, the city's director of community and economic development.

The district will pursue due diligence on the property for construction purposes. The school is planned to open in the fall of 2021.
