Vancouver Police Release Critical Incident Video - 06/09/23
Vancouver, Wash. – On May 30, 2023, the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) was involved in an officer involved shooting. The three involved Vancouver Police officers were wearing body worn cameras (BWC) at the time of the shooting. This is the first officer involved shooting since the VPD camera program was implemented.
The Vancouver Police Department implemented BWC’s in March 2023 to increase transparency, trust, and accountability.
Following an officer involved shooting involving the Vancouver Police Department, the department will release a Critical Incident Video, which includes video captured from department body worn cameras (BWC). The release of these videos is at the discretion of the Chief of Police and is separate from any video that may be released by the Independent Investigation Team.
The independent investigation of the May 30 officer involved shooting is being conducted by the Lower Columbia Major Crimes Team, led by the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office. Vancouver Police personnel are not involved in that investigation.
The Critical Incident Video from the May 30, 2023, officer involved shooting can be viewed on the Vancouver Police Department Critical Incident Videos page.
The Vancouver Police Department will not be commenting on the investigation or the content in the Critical Incident Video. Release of the video is to provide some visual context of the incident.
The Vancouver Police Department values the sanctity of human life and the dignity of all persons, and any loss of life is tragic. The video contains graphic images and viewer discretion is advised.
