Salem City Club Presents Oregon's Newest Constitutional Officer: Secretary of State Shemia Fagan - 04/20/21

Salem, OR (April 20, 2021) - On Friday, April 30 at noon on Zoom, the Salem City Club hosts Oregon’s 28th Secretary of State Shemia Fagan. She is one of the state’s three constitutional officers, along with the Governor and Treasurer, who has just completed 100 days in office, facing considerable challenges in the areas of redistricting and elections, and economic recovery.

Fagan says she “oversees an agency that is critical to ensuring Oregonians can participate in their democracy, protecting the state's scarce resources, helping facilitate the creation and maintenance of small businesses, and building an awareness of the whole story of Oregon.”

Before serving as Secretary of State, Fagan, a civil rights attorney, worked at Ater Wynne LLP and later at HKM Employment Attorneys. She holds a B.A. degree from Northwest Nazarene University in Idaho and received her J.D. from Lewis and Clark School of Law in Portland.

Fagan served as a member of the Oregon House of Representatives from 2013 until 2017 and as a member of the Oregon Senate from 2019 until 2020.

During her time in the Legislature, Secretary Fagan was an active proponent of expanding access to the ballot, including helping to pass Oregon’s landmark Motor Voter Law and National Popular Vote and working to strengthen the nation’s most successful vote-by-mail system.

A lifelong Oregonian, Secretary Fagan was sworn in as the Secretary of State on January 4, 2021.
