Willamette National Cemetery Hosts Memorial Day Ceremony May 30 (Photo) -05/26/22
What: The public is invited to the 2022 Memorial Day commemoration ceremony hosted by Willamette National Cemetery.
Who: Featured Speaker: Jared Howard, Director, Willamette National Cemetery; music by 234th Army Band & the Portland Police Highland Guard Pipe Band; fly-over by Oregon Air National Guard 142nd Fighter Wing.
When: Monday, May 30, 2022, at 10 a.m. Ceremony will last approx. 1 hour.
Where: Willamette National Cemetery, Rostrum at 11800 SE Mt. Scott Blvd. Portland, OR 97086-6937 (directional signs will be posted)
Background: The Department of Veterans Affairs Willamette National Cemetery will host a solemn Memorial Day wreath laying ceremony, accompanied by speeches, the playing of Taps, and rifle salute by the OANG Military Honors Team. This will be the first public Memorial Day ceremony at our cemetery since 2019, and we are eager to have the local community and our media partners spread the word and attend.
VA operates 155 national cemeteries and 34 soldiers' lots and monument sites in 44 states and Puerto Rico. More than 5 million Americans, including Veterans of every war and conflict, are buried in VA cemeteries. Fulfilling President Lincoln’s call “to care for him who shall have borne the battle,” VA also provides headstones, markers or medallions for Veterans buried in state, territorial and tribal Veterans cemeteries or interred in private cemeteries.
Special Instructions: While this will be an outdoor event, all attendees, including media, are encouraged to adhere to CDC guidelines, wear masks and maintain physical distancing from other attendees to limit the transmission of COVID-19.
