VA Portland Health Care System Announces New Deputy Director (Photo) -11/09/20

PORTLAND, Ore. – VA Portland Health Care System (VAPORHCS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Karla M. Azcuy as the new deputy director of the Portland-based healthcare system.  Ms. Azcuy will oversee administrative operations of VAPORHCS which includes fiscal, facilities, supply chain, and strategic planning delivery of healthcare to more than 95,000 Veterans and an operating budget of approximately $1 billion.  

“We are thrilled to bring Ms. Azcuy on board as the new deputy director of our health care system,” said Darwin Goodspeed, VAPORHCS director. “Her sound leadership qualities and proven experience will be valuable assets for the facility, the employees and volunteers, and most importantly, for the Veterans we are honored to serve.” 

Ms. Azcuy has spent the duration of her almost 12-year Veterans Health Administration career in the Pacific Northwest within the Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) 20.  After completing an administrative residency, she has held key leadership roles within human resources and primary care.

Ms. Azcuy holds a master’s in healthcare administration from the University of North Florida, a bachelor of science in health sciences from Clemson University, she graduated from VISN 20’s Leadership Development Institute (LDI) in 2017, and has been accepted into the 2021 Health Care Leadership Development Program (HCLDP).  Ms. Azcuy is a professional member of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).

VAPORHCS is a two-division, Joint Commission-accredited 1A facility that administers a full range of primary, emergency, specialty, tertiary, and long-term care to Veterans throughout Oregon and southwestern Washington. In addition to two main divisions located in Portland and Vancouver, Washington, VAPORHCS operates nine community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs) located in Newport, Lincoln City, Warrenton, Bend, Salem, Fairview, downtown Portland, West Linn, Hillsboro, and The Dalles. The VAPORHCS catchment area covers more than 30,000 square miles and 26 counties.
