Donations needed ahead of winter storm to help homeless

Portland, Ore., - Union Gospel Mission is seeking donations of winter coats, hand warmers, blankets, boots, and coffee in preparation for the winter weather expected to hit this weekend.

The snow and cold temperatures are dangerous and life threatening for those who are unsheltered. The mission will open its overnight emergency cold weather shelter for the next week and extend daytime hours due the cold.

It costs about $16 to provide a night of emergency cold weather shelter, which includes a hot breakfast, and clothes and gear needed to help the homeless survive a winter storm.

Lori Quinney Food Services Director said they can really use donations of coffee, ground or whole bean.

Items can be dropped off at 3 NW Third Avenue in Portland or call 503-274-4483. Donations can be made online at www.ugmportland.org.
