Students will be building rockets on Wednesday, October 2 at 2 p.m. at Centennial Elementary School in preparation for launch day on Friday, October 4 at 2 p.m. at Mountain Vista Community School.
This inaugural Rocket Day event will enable 800 Harrison School District (D2) fifth-grade students to build and launch their very own rockets. Rocket Day planners are partnering with Harrison School District to provide their students with free Estes rocket kits and volunteers from Rocky Mountain NDIA, the Colorado Springs Rocket Society (COSROCS) and the UCCS Development Foundation will help them with assembly and launch.
The event is part of an ambitious quest to have every fifth grader in El Paso County build and launch an Estes rocket by 2026. Through having the experience of building their own rockets, students will be encouraged to use their STEAM skills and gain more of an interest in a future career in a related field.
