UCC Celebrates Grand Opening Of New Track & Field Complex Aug. 29 (Photo) - 08/25/26

ROSEBURG, Ore., Aug. 25, 2026 — Umpqua Community College will celebrate a milestone more than three decades in the making with the grand opening of its new Track & Field Complex on Saturday, Aug. 29, from 8 to 11 a.m. at UCC’s Roseburg campus.

 

The free community celebration will feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony, Riverhawk 5K, pancake breakfast, family-friendly activities and opportunities to explore the new facility.

 

The grand opening marks a new chapter for Riverhawk Athletics and the culmination of years of work to bring collegiate track and field competition back to the UCC campus. Earlier this year, UCC hosted its first home collegiate track meet since 1995, welcoming athletes back to campus competition for the first time in approximately 30 years.

 

“This facility represents much more than a new place to compete,” said Craig Jackson, UCC Director of Athletics and Events. “It represents opportunity for our student-athletes, a stronger future for Riverhawk Athletics and a place where our broader community can come together. We’re excited to celebrate everyone whose support and commitment helped make this possible.”

 

The morning begins with a welcome and ribbon cutting at 8:30 a.m., followed by the Riverhawk 5K and pancake breakfast at 9 a.m. Family-friendly activities will continue from 9:15 to 11 a.m. The 5K is open to runners and walkers of all ages and abilities and will begin and finish on UCC’s new track. Registration is free, with donations accepted in support of UCC Track & Field and Cross Country.

 

For Head Track & Field and Cross Country Coach Alan King, the complex is especially meaningful as a permanent home for current and future Riverhawk athletes.

 

“Our student-athletes now have a place they can truly call home,” King said. “They can train here, compete here and have their families, friends and community come watch them represent UCC. This facility changes the experience for our athletes and gives us an opportunity to continue building a program that Douglas County can be proud of.”

 

The college held the new facility’s first collegiate competition Feb. 28 as a soft opening, marking the return of home collegiate track competition to UCC after more than three decades.

 

The complex is designed not only to support Riverhawk student-athletes but also to expand opportunities for youth athletics, K-12 competitions, community recreation, campus events and regional gatherings.

 

The facility has been made possible through the generosity of donors, partners and community supporters. UCC extends special thanks to Shelley Briggs Loosley, whose leadership, passion and significant investment of time were instrumental in initiating the project and helping bring the vision for a new track and field complex to life. As the project’s lead donor, her commitment helped build the momentum needed to move the facility from an idea to reality.

 

Additional donors and supporters include the Briggs Loosley Foundation; John & Jean Loosley Charitable Foundation; Eric & Kristen Ball; Simmons Law, P.C.; Pat & Julee Wright; Brent & Heidi Eichman; Rachel & Jim Pokrandt; Jacky & Rick Sohn; and Mike & Lori Keller.

 

The facility is also supported through UCC’s five-year partnership with Rogue Credit Union and is recognized as the UCC Track & Field Complex Sponsored by Rogue Credit Union.

 

Community members are encouraged to attend whether they plan to run, walk, cheer on participants or simply celebrate the completion of the facility.

 

Those unable to attend can support current and future Riverhawks by making a gift to UCC Track & Field or Cross Country through the UCC Foundation.
