New Tigard-Tualatin Food Program Feeds Thousands Of People During Coronavirus Crisis; Raises Nearly $250,000 (Photo) - 05/05/20

TIGARD -- Packed with Pride, a new food box distribution program created to serve vulnerable children and families in the Tigard-Tualatin School District (TTSD), has raised over $250,000 in its first six weeks, led by a $100,000 grant from the Lam Research Foundation and a $20,000 grant from the Resident Aid Fund of Tigard (RAFT). The program has distributed over 4,000 boxes of food, feeding thousands of people in need in the local community. These two grants guarantee that the food program will continue into the fall. 

“Thousands of children rely on our schools to access basic nutrition, and with schools closed, we had to create an alternative system to get food to the kids who need it,” said Ben Bowman, Tigard-Tualatin School Board Member and co-founder of the program. “That’s why we started Packed with Pride. No child in our community should go without food during this crisis.”

The food program is a partnership between the Tigard-Tualatin School District, the Foundation for Tigard-Tualatin Schools, the Tigard-Tualatin Education Association, and the Tigard-Tualatin Student Union -- the first collaborative effort of all four groups. It was founded after schools closed because of the COVID-19 crisis on March 19. It is powered by private donations and community volunteers.

“We are so grateful for the generosity of all our donors, and most notably Lam Research for their $100,000 grant for COVID-19 relief,” said Margie Greene, Executive Director of the Foundation for Tigard-Tualatin Schools and co-founder of the program. “These funds will now allow us to continue this important mission through August. We want to help relieve families of one worry: feeding their families.” 

Lam Research has an office and manufacturing sites in Tualatin and is one of the biggest employers in the school district. 

The RAFT grant was awarded by the City of Tigard to support residents impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. 

“During this challenging time, our community must come together to make sure every child is taken care of,” said Tigard Mayor Jason Snider. “Packed with Pride is doing exactly that. The City of Tigard is proud to support their work.” 

Additional co-founders of Packed with Pride include Tigard-Tualatin School Board Chair Maureen Wolf and Tigard-Tualatin Education Association President Scott Herron. Over 600 teachers, parents, and students have signed up to volunteer with the effort. Packed with Pride has garnered support from businesses and faith-based organizations across Tigard and Tualatin, and hundreds of people have contributed.

Packed with Pride is currently operating out of the Tigard High School (THS) cafeteria and is strictly following all recommended COVID-19 safety guidelines, including required face masks and gloves, and social distancing for all volunteers. Each Friday, over 400 TTSD families pick up food boxes for the week through curbside service at THS, without leaving their vehicles. In addition, on Saturdays, dozens of volunteer drivers deliver on average 400 food boxes to families at their doorsteps.
