Jim Quiring, a local who was born and raised in the Santiam Canyon, an advocate for the Opal Creek Wilderness (https://www.orartswatch.org/opal-creek-wilderness-a-story-of-survival/) and the first Director of the Tillamook Forest Center when it first opened in 2006, has authored "Beautiful Stream" -- a book about the history of the Little North Santiam. It's a subject near and dear to Jim's heart and one with which he has a long and intimate history. The book includes chapters telling about the harrowing near-death evacutations of a number of Forestry employees and locals during the Labor Day fires of 2020 which devasted much of the area.
The State Forests Trust of Oregon is hosting a book launch party for Jim at the Old Mehama School and Community Center on OCtober 29th at 3pm. The event is open to the public. Jim will read excerpts from his book and talk about how he came to write it. Copies of the book, published by the Oregon State University Press, will be available for purchase. The Old Mehama center is located at 22057 Emma St. SE, Mehama, Oregon.
