Structure Fire - 11/04/19

At 10:54 Sunday night Sheridan/SW Polk/ West Valley Fire Districts were dispatched to a reported structure fire at 15565 Oakdale Road in Polk County. When arriving on scene, a SW Polk Fire Engine found a detached open bay garage with a large amount of fire involvement throughout the entire structure. There was also fire extension that traveled into the surrounding trees, adding challenges to firefighting efforts. Sheridan/SW Polk/West Valley Battalion Chief 140 arrived and assumed command and ordered extinguishment and nearby residential exposure protection operations. Mutual Aid fire apparatus and personnel were requested and recieved.

Sheridan/SW Polk/ West Valley Fire Districts would like to thank our mutual aid partners for their rapid response and tremendous assistance in extinguishing a very large fire. Dallas Fire & EMS, Polk County Fire District, Salem Fire Department, Willamate Valley communications Center for assisting with managing multiple resources, and the Oregon Office of State Fire Marshal assisted. The damages to the garage were extensive, a tractor, automobile and numerous stored belongings were lost as result of the large fire.

The cause of the fire was determined to be the result of improper disposal of hot ashes near the building. Please be aware as we head into the winter season to remember to properly dispose of all materials from your wood burning stoves.
