On Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at approximately 7:15 am, police responded to a citizen's call of a person lying injured in the road near Mill Street SE and Ford Street SE. Officers arrived and began to treat the male for serious wounds to his head and neck area. Eventually, the male was transported to Salem Health for further treatment. At this time, the Police Department does not have an update on his condition.

After securing the scene, officers began their investigation and subsequently learned the injured male had been in an altercation with a male acquaintance shortly before he was found. The altercation took place in a residence a short distance from the intersection. The other involved male is cooperating with detectives. The investigation is ongoing and further details may be released when they become available. Although this incident occurred near Richmond Elementary, and roads leading to the school were temporarily closed, it is not believed that students were in danger during the incident.
